The MA in English Language Teaching at ELTE is designed for students who already have an understanding of the key characteristics of English-speaking cultures and the relationship between culture, language, and ways of life and behaviour. Applicants should also be familiar with established methodological approaches to language learning and teaching, as well as with various techniques for developing reading, writing, speaking, listening comprehension, interaction, and mediation skills.
This 60-credit, two-semester Master’s programme focuses primarily on the methodology of English language teaching. Additional areas of study include intercultural studies, assessment, teacher communication, and classroom practice. In the second semester of the programme, students undertake a 50-hour teaching placement at a language school under the supervision of a mentor.
Programme Details
The aim of the programme is to prepare students for educational, pedagogical, research, planning, and development tasks related to English language teaching and language acquisition.
- The lecturers involved in the program are internationally recognised experts with international teaching experience who regularly give talks, presentations and teacher training courses at universities and conferences around the world in the field of ELT.
- Besides the hands-on teaching practice, the program includes a high proportion of face-to face teaching, with a combination of tutor and student input, including various group activities and students’ presentations and a low number of course participants on the course to ensure quality of teaching and learning
- The program collaboration with local and international ELT experts to ensure that students develop their professional skills, share best practices and can network.

Career prospects for our graduates vary depending on their ambition but entrants of our MA English Language Pedagogy courses typically come with the specific intention of entering the ELT/TESOL profession. The specialist knowledge gained enables the participant to take senior or specialist roles (e.g., in CALL, ESP, teaching young learners or testing), not only in the classroom but also in educational advice and management, programme evaluation, syllabus design and teacher education.
For those wanting to take their research interest even further, within our University we run a Language Pedagogy PhD programme, where we offer teaching and research supervision in language acquisition, language learning and language teaching; culture and communication; psycholinguistics; language disorders and sociolinguistics.
Note that this qualification in itself does not enable the holder to teach in the state education system.

Entry requirements
Applicants must hold a university bachelor’s degree (or an equivalent college degree) in the fields listed below. Full credit acknowledgement is only given for a bachelor’s degree in the fields of Liberal Arts and Educational Sciences.
In the case of a BA or MA degree from another field of study, each degree will be considered individually, and transcripts from your BA or MA degree as well as course descriptions will be requested. The applicant must have at least 50 credits to enter the programme from the fields of Liberal Arts and Educational Sciences.

Language requirements
The language of instruction for the entire program is English.
Language requirements: C1 level English (CEFR)
Admission to the Master’s programme requires applicants to hold a state-recognised advanced-level (C1) comprehensive English language certificate, or an equivalent secondary school leaving certificate or higher education diploma. In the case of international applicants, equivalent evidence of English language proficiency must be provided.
Following minimum results are preferred:

Application deadlines
The deadline for application means the deadline of submission of the full and complete application package in the online system.
Period 1 (with Early Bird discount): 01/10-30/11/2025 23:59 (CET)
Period 2 (with Early Bird discount): 01/02-31/03/2026 23:59 (CET)
Period 3: 01/04-31/05/2026 23:59 (CET)
The application procedure includes 3 periods in order to give the applicants the freedom to submit their application when it’s most suitable for them. The applicants of each period have the same chance to get admittance for the programme. However, please note, that the Faculty of Humanities ELTE reserves the right to cancel the entrance periods in case the number of the admitted applicants reaches the limit during the previous entrance periods.
Procedure of the application
The application starts in the online application system. Students need to register in the system, fill in the online application form, upload the required documents and follow the instructions during the application process.

Entrance examination and selection process
The entrance exam contains a discussion about the motivation and program-related academic background and professional experience of the applicant. Successful applicants must have an excellent command of English and pass the entrance exam. The format of the entrance exam is an online interview.
Procedure of the entrance examination
Oral Interview
An admissions interview is conducted to assess the applicant’s C1-level language proficiency, academic aptitude and professional subject knowledge. The entrance exam also contains a discussion about the motivation of the applicant.
The format of the entrance exam is an online interview. Applicants must show a photo ID at the start of the interview, and a camera showing the student and his/her surroundings must be on throughout the interview. The applicant is prohibited from using earphones or headphones during the online oral examination.
Ranking is based on the overall evaluation of academic excellence (based on the submitted documents) and the results of the entrance exam.
Results and the official decision will be announced in the application system. Admission letters are sent out also in the online application system within a few days.
