Main research areas
In my researches I study the social and spiritual modernisation of national communities in formation, starting from the rule of traditional –confessional, territorial, linguistic, feudal etc. – identities and dividing lines, afterwards following their struggles from the end of the 18th c. with the nation-building processes, that aimed at the homogenous national language and identity, on the other side pointing at their elements, built into the victorious modern national consciousness, literary language and historical-cultural canon. The base of this all will be the social and cultural definition of the subregions of the whole space, as well as the precising of the meaning and the change of the terms bourgeois and embourgeoisment.
The object of my researches is the place of confessional affiliations in modern national integration processes – or in their failures –, starting from the medieval situation – organizing role of catholicism as well as orthodoxy in society and culture or its regional variations, analysing the differentiating role of the reformation and of the greek catholic union, researching their heritage and interactions in the long 19th c.,their role in the formation in the unified literary language, in the interpretation of the past and recent culture, at the end their surviving and opressed state, at least their forced illegal existence after the takeover of the anticlerical communist dictatorships.
In my researches I study the basic element of language based nation-building processes, characteristic in the Eastern half of Europe, i. e the formation of unified literary languages. My starting points are the series of premodern factors, built into the new identities – confessional, regional and feudal ties, their interactions and conflicts, contrasting with the given mother tongue, everyday used langue, dialects at regional written status and on comparative base studying the problems of German and Polish, only to be improved, of the Czech, Hungarian, Romanian, Greek, to be renewed, and of the Slovak, Slovene, Croatian, Serbian, Bulgarian and Albanian, to be created
In my researches I study the forms of exagerated national pride, appearing everywhere in the eastern half of Europe in the 19-20th cc.: the myth of former greatness and as its contrast the actual weak power position or even opressed situation, historical and literary falsifications, messianism, prejudices toward the neighbours etc, mapping their functioning in the historical consciousness, culture, ideology and in some cases political practice of the given nations, continuously highlighting the similar nature of these phenomena, the force of foreign examples and of the practice of borrowing.
The starting point of my studies is the creation, change and use of the term minority in the 19-20th cc. and nowadays and on this base the research of the national and ethnic minorities of the region, comparition the fate of the given communities before and after the Versailles peace system, as well as their situation in the years of the WW2 and the coalition times, in the decades of communist dictatorships and in the frameworks of the actual parliamentary systems.
