Application
The application starts on the online application system. Students need to register in the system, fill in the online application form, upload the required documents and follow the instructions during the application process.
Students must upload all the required documents in the online application system, and after adding all the required documents, submit it.
Stipendium Hungaricum and Hungarian Diaspora Scholarship applicants use a different application system. Find details in the section "Stipendium Hungaricum-Hungarian Diaspora Scholarship"

How to approach our doctoral supervisors?
- Find an announced doctoral topic that is related to your field of interest. The list of doctoral topics can be found below organized by doctoral schools.
- Use the e-mail address in the excel file below to contact our supervisors.
- In your letter, please refer to the announced topic you would like to apply for. As an attachment please send your academic CV and your research plan. Research topics can only be accepted if they fit into the research profile of the supervisors of the programs.
- (Please note that our supervisors might not reply if your letter does not contain the requested attachments)
- If any of our supervisors can support your plans, they will send you a Letter of Acceptance/Statement of Supervisor. That document is necessary to complete your Ph.D. application.

Master's diploma with qualification (minimum with 'good' qualification) - Applicants can attach this document until the July 2024.

an official English translation of the MA certificate. Details: The translation is needed only if the language of the original is not English, German or French.

research plan (3-5 pages) Please note that the research plan is the result of your own intellectual work. Plagiarised texts or texts prepared with the help of artificial intelligence may lead to exclusion from the admission procedure.

professional CV signed by the applicant. (Obligatory CV form for the Doctoral School of Literary Studies)
- minimum B2 level complex (written and oral) language exam. The following English language exams are accepted:

- TOEFL PBT (Paper-based test): 516-554 or
- TOEFL IBT (Internet-based test): 66-82 or
- TOEFL IBT Home Edition: 66-82 or
- IELTS (International English Language Testing System): 6.0 or
- CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference): B2 or
- Duolingo: 85 - a Bachelor or Master diploma is accepted as proof of language skills If the language of the studies was English
- If your mother tongue is English then you have to have a B2 level or higher language exam from another language.
- ONLY the following English language exams are accepted:
- proof of transfer of the application fee-30 EUR
- Letter of Acceptance from the future supervisor
- a list of publications (not obligatory)
- recommendations (not obligatory)

Deadline for Applications
The deadline for application means the deadline of submission of the full and complete application package on the online system, and the transfer of the application fee.
The Faculty of Humanities expects the application to be submitted by the following deadline:
- For Stipendium Hungaricum: January 2024, 14:00 (TBA) (no application fee)
- For Hungarian Diaspora Scholarship: January 2024 (TBA) (no application fee)
- For self-paying positions: 6 May 2024
Entrance Exam
The applicants will be interviewed by an admission committee (entrance examination). In this interview, they will be asked about previous university achievements, the individual research plan and the scientific competence in the field of interest.
Approximate date of the interviews: May 2024 – June 2024 ( for Stipendium Hungaricum and Hungarian Diaspora Scholarship: March 2024 - May 2024.)
The Faculty's doctoral council decides of acceptance or rejection on the grounds of the admission committees reports made following the interview.
The resolution regarding admission or rejection is sent out by the Department of Doctoral and Academic Affairs.
Approximate date of the decision: 31 July 2024
The admission resolution does not create a student status in itself, only the personal enrollment at the University establishes the student status.
Tuition fee/semester
For EU/EEA-citizens: 130 000 Ft
Non-EU/EEA-citizens: 2 600 €, to be paid in HUF at the exchange rate valid on the day of payment.
Stipendium Hungaricum- Hungarian Diaspora Scholarship
Stipendium Hungaricum
The programme is based on bilateral educational cooperation agreements signed between the Ministries responsible for education in the sending countries/territories and Hungary or between institutions. Currently nearly 90 Sending Partners are engaged in the programs throughout 5 different continents and the geographical scope of the programmme is spreading each year.
The program provides full scholarship during the whole educational program.
The new Call for Applications 2024/2025 is available and the application surface is open. The deadline for applications is January 2024 (TBA).
Hungarian Diaspora Scholarship
The Hungarian Diaspora Scholarship was established by the Hungarian Government for those who live in a Hungarian diaspora outside of Europe and wish to study at a Hungarian higher education institution to develop their personal, professional and cultural relations to Hungary.
The programme aims to support the professional advancement of the scholarship holders with high-quality Hungarian higher education while improving their Hungarian language skills and strengthening their Hungarian identity. After graduation, scholarship holders return to their home country with competitive skills and knowledge that enable them to support their community, preserve Hungarian values and reinforce the relations between the diaspora and Hungary.
