In ShanghaiRanking’s 2026 ranking, Eötvös Loránd University is listed among the world’s best in nine narrower fields, and is the only Hungarian institution to appear in four of them.
The organization published its 2026 subject-specific global ranking on September 15, which evaluated the performance of the world’s top universities in five broad areas (natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences, and social sciences), covering 57 narrower subject areas. This year’s ranking includes nearly 2,000 universities from almost 100 countries worldwide.
Eötvös Loránd University was ranked in 9 out of the 57 fields, and is the only Hungarian institution listed in physics, communication, psychology, and sociology. The university holds a leading position in seven areas in Hungary, tied in two of them. It improved its position in one category, namely in physics and psychology. For the first time this year, our university was included in the subject rankings for communication, political science, and sociology.
We have summarized ELTE’s results in the table below.
| Field | International Ranking | National Ranking |
|---|---|---|
| Physics | 151–200. | 1. |
| Communication | 151–200. | 1. |
| Veterinary Science | 151–200. | 2. |
| Education | 201–300. | 1. |
| Psychology | 201–300. | 1. |
| Political Science | 201–300. | 1. (tie) |
| Sociology | 201–300. | 1. |
| Mathematics | 301–400. | 1. (tie) |
| Biology | 301–400. | 2. |
The ranking primarily classifies universities by their publication performance in the given fields, which means ELTE is also listed in areas where it does not specifically offer courses—such as veterinary science—since research by its staff also applies to these fields.
Internationally, Harvard gained the most (11) leading positions in this year’s ranking, followed by Tsinghua University in Beijing with 7, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with 5 top subjects. Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Indiana University Bloomington, and the University of Chicago each secured two first places as well. American universities have a total of 4,119 listed subject areas, Chinese universities appear with 4,077 fields, and in this imaginary competition, the United Kingdom takes the third spot on the podium with 1,536 subject areas listed.
The results can be browsed by countries and institutions on the ShanghaiRanking website, and ELTE’s achievements in national and international rankings are summarized in this article.
