The event opened with Dr. Orsolya Réthelyi, Vice-Dean for International Affairs, who greeted the newcomers with warm welcome words and an introduction to the faculty. She highlighted the diverse and inclusive academic community at ELTE and encouraged students to take advantage of the numerous opportunities available to them.
Following the introduction, Elizabeth Juarez Esquivel, a Communication and Media Studies MA student, shared her experiences as an international student at ELTE. She offered valuable insights into academic life, cultural adaptation, and student engagement, providing newcomers with useful tips on making the most of their time in Budapest.
In a session titled Studying Abroad: An Adventure in Transitioning, Dr. Uwe Pohl explored the challenges and opportunities that come with studying in a foreign country. His talk emphasized the importance of cultural adaptation, personal development, and academic success while studying abroad.
Students were introduced to key organizations that support international student life at ELTE. The Student Union (HÖK) provides representation, academic assistance, and engagement opportunities, while the Erasmus Student Network (ESN) offers social and cultural activities to help students integrate into university life. Additionally, the International Student Advisory Committee (ISAC) supports international students throughout their academic journey.
To help students navigate their academic life, Ágnes Ágai presented an overview of the faculty libraries, detailing available resources, study spaces, and research support services. At the end of the morning session Tekla Gaál, Head of the Department of International Affairs, provided practical information on administrative procedures, academic regulations, and support services available to international students.
The rest of the week is promising to be filled with an exciting array of events, including fun-filled activities such as karaoke night, ice-skating, pub quiz and campus tours, as well as orientation and information sessions aimed at our international students starting their studies this term on Foundation courses or exchange programmes. The full schedule of events is available online.
The Faculty international coordinators are looking forward to meeting our new international ELTE citizens and helping them settle in and integrate into university life through shared activities.
We wish all new students a successful and enriching experience at ELTE!
