Culture and Gastronomy from Ecuador to Vietnam
More than a dozen countries showcased their dance, music, fashion, and culture at the international cultural day held at ELTE’s Faculty of Humanities.

The ELTE Faculty of Humanities (BTK), Department of International Affairs, in collaboration with the faculty's student council and the International Student Advisory Committee (ISAC), organized the international cultural day on March 18. The event, held at the Library Club, featured mini-exhibitions, posters, traditional foods, and games presented by ELTE BTK faculty members and international students. Meanwhile, the stage was filled with musical and dance performances from Hungary to Egypt, Venezuela, and all the way to Vietnam.

The diverse cultural event was opened by Orsolya Réthelyi, Vice Dean for International Affairs at BTK, the main organizer was Lilla Gilián from the Department of International Affairs and the host was Laura Alzmeter, a student assistant at BTK Department of International Affairs and President of ISAC.

The stage performances included classical and modern pieces by faculty members and students from the Institute of Art Mediation and Music, the SEAS Singers choir of the Institute of English and American Studies, the choir of the Department of Scandinavian Languages and Literatures, Bharatanatyam dance by students of the Sivasakti Kalánanda Dance Theatre, bilingual performances of Hungarian songs by faculty and students of the Department of Dutch Studies, and classical Chinese dances performed by students from ELTE’s Hungarian language preparatory course.

The Department of Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies hosted a fashion show featuring the traditional attire of Chinese ethnic groups, while the Institute for Art Theory and Media Studies introduced the audience to the traditional Chinese string instrument, the GuZheng. The program also included Venezuelan and Vietnamese folk songs, a Hungarian rap poem accompanied by guitar, a glimpse into Kyrgyz folk dances, and a performance by the ELTE Folk Dance Ensemble, which has represented Hungarian traditions since 1957.

The mini-exhibitions and stage performances were evaluated by both the audience and a jury. The audience award went to Venezuela’s exhibition and Costa Rica’s poster. Based on the jury’s decision, winners were selected in different categories (instrumental, vocal, or dance performance, fashion), with awards going to China, Egypt, Vietnam, Ecuador, and Kyrgyzstan. The winners received ELTE BTK gift packages, and the event concluded with a karaoke night following the awards ceremony.
