Libraries

Its impressive special collections, the legacies of its former professors and renowned scientists, its private libraries, its museum holdings (unique, even in world terms, original prints, as well as manuscripts, minutes, etc.), its own periodical publications (scientific journals, almanacs), its doctoral dissertations, and its non-traditional documents (e.g. sheet music, photos) are indisputable treasures of Hungarian cultural heritage: several of its collections also function as national specialized libraries.
Some of our libraries are written in dead or exotic languages, collect special sources, and their rarities are visited from all over the world. The total area of the library reading rooms, storage rooms, and study rooms is nearly 7,000 m2, where we provide specially tailored library services for those interested, appropriate for the given major.
From 2020 the departmental and institute libraries, special collections, and the Central Reading Hall - 48 separate library units in total - are organized into 7 specialized libraries and work as one cooperating organization, called the ELTE Faculty of Humanities Library.
The mission of the ELTE Faculty of Humanities Library is to support education and research at the Eötvös Loránd University Faculty of Humanities, and to preserve national and universal knowledge and culture.

MORE ELTE LIBRARIES
The ELTE University Library Service (ELTE ULS) is the name of the Eötvös Loránd University network. It contains the University Library and Archive (as the university’s main library), 9 faculty libraries and some other libraries which are not part of any group. All of them are in accordance with the law and regulations.
The library tasks at the university are realized by the member libraries of the University Library Service in cooperation with each other. In addition to the cooperation, each library operates and provides services in accordance with their unique collections and own target groups, about which detailed information can be found on the websites of each library.
