Textual Tradition of Mongolian Buddhism: Written and Oral Traditions

The conference is organized by the ELTE Department of Mongolian and Inner Asian Studies and the Research Centre for Mongolian Studies in collaboration with partner institutions from Hungary and Mongolia. Following the success of previous conferences this year’s event will focus on the textual traditions of Mongolian Buddhism, including its history, philosophy, education, monastic life, rituals, and folklore – both in written texts and oral narratives.

The conference will highlight the Buddhist traditions of Mongols living in present-day Mongolia, as well as those in China, Russia, and other Mongolian communities. Special attention will also be given to the work of Professor György Kara, who played a pioneering role in the study of Mongolian nomadic books and texts.
The working languages of the conference are English, Mongolian, and Russian. The academic presentations will later be published in book format. As part of the program, a guided visit to the Oriental Collection of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences will take place on April 7.
The first day of the conference (April 8) will be held at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), while the second day (April 9) will take place at Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church in Hungary.
