Forbidden Words in Contemporary Scandinavia
2025.03.12.

The ELTE Department of Scandinavian Languages and Literatures invites to the public lecture by Carsten Levisen (Roskild University & Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies) on 20 March 2025.
This talk explores “linguistic taboo” in Scandinavian discourse - in relation to global trends. Taking everyday language use as a point of departure, topics such as death, the human body, mental illness, and religion will be explored from a vantage point in linguistic theories of taboo, euphemism, and dysphemism, and discussed in relation to recent studies in “orders of ortholexy” and language ideology.
Date: 20 March 2025, 16.00-17.00
Venue: ELTE Faculty of Humanities, Building R, 1st floor, room 151. (see on map)
