Cyril Pasquier "Canon, exegesis, and marriage: Irenaeus of Lyon as a reader of the Bible" című, angol nyelvű előadásával folytatódik az ELTE Ókortudományi Intézetében működő Bibliatudományi program "Az Írás arcai" című sorozata.

Irenaeus of Lyon lived at a time when the canon of Scriptures was not fully established yet. He contributed to the canonisation of the Bible in the context of his polemic with the Gnostics who also relied on writings which Irenaeus discerned not belonging to genuine revelation. His main criteria of selection were the rule of faith and the apostolic succession. Irenaeus interpreted the Bible both literally and spiritually, which is especially true for the Old Testament messianic prophecies.

While his hope for the time of final bliss was fully incarnate, Irenaeus never fell into materialism because, as the flesh is always connected to the soul, the scriptural texts’ letter is always linked to its spirit. This is also true of Irenaeus’ interpretation of marriage: he does not erase the physical commitment, but reading some of the Old Testament’s marriages allegorically, opens to the union of Christ and the Church, the type of all marriages.

Cyril Pasquier is a French theologian living in Budapest. In 2018, he obtained a doctorate from the University of Fribourg in Switzerland. His thesis focuses on the thousand-year reign and was published in 2021 (Approches du millénium – Et si Irénée de Lyon avait raison? Münster: Aschendorff). He is currently working on marriage for habilitation and on environmental issues in relation to the encyclical Laudato si.
